Fire Protection System Maintenance Checklist for Malaysian Businesses

Monthly: Visual check of the control panel for fault indicators, test a sample of manual call points on rotation.

Quarterly to annually (depending on system size and usage): Full system test including all detectors and sounders, battery backup check, verification that any integration with sprinklers or suppression systems is still functioning correctly.

Log book: Every test, fault, and repair should be recorded in the fire alarm log book - this is checked during Fire Certificate renewal.

Fire Sprinkler Systems

Monthly: Check gauge pressures on the system, confirm control valves are in the correct (open) position and not accidentally shut.

Annually: Professional inspection of pipework, sprinkler heads, and pump systems (where fitted), including a flow test.

Fire Hose Reel and Hydrant Systems

Monthly: Visual check that hose reels are accessible, undamaged, and correctly wound; hydrant covers and connections are not obstructed or damaged.

Annually: Pressure and flow testing to confirm the system delivers adequate water pressure when needed.

Emergency Lighting and Exit Signage

Monthly: Function test (many units have a test button) to confirm battery backup kicks in during a simulated power failure.

Annually: Full duration test to confirm lights stay on for the required time on backup power.

Escape Routes

Ongoing, not a scheduled check: Escape routes should be reviewed continuously as part of daily operations - storage, new furniture, or temporary displays can block a route without anyone realising it until an inspection (or an actual emergency) reveals the problem.
