How Often Should You Service Your Fire Extinguisher? Bomba Requirements Explained

A fire extinguisher sitting quietly in the corner of your premises looks the same whether it's fully charged and ready, or years past its last service and unreliable when you actually need it. That's exactly why Malaysian Standard MS 1539 and BOMBA regulations set out clear servicing intervals - because you can't tell the difference just by looking.

The Two-Tier System: Monthly Checks and Annual Servicing

MS 1539 splits fire extinguisher maintenance into two levels, and both matter.

Monthly visual checks can be done by your own staff and take only a few minutes per unit. Check that the pressure gauge needle sits in the green zone (not red or yellow), look for any physical damage or corrosion on the cylinder, confirm the nozzle and trigger move freely, make sure nothing is blocking access to the extinguisher, and check that the inspection label is still legible. Keeping a simple log of these checks - even a clipboard by the unit - is good practice and useful if BOMBA ever asks for records during an inspection.

Annual professional servicing is where MS 1539 requires a licensed fire safety technician, registered with BOMBA or an approved supplier. This is a proper internal inspection: the technician opens the extinguisher, checks internal components, tests the pressure system, replaces seals and O-rings as needed, refills with the correct extinguishing agent, and issues a service certificate with a new eFEIS sticker. Without this annual service and its accompanying certificate, your extinguishers - and by extension your Fire Certificate - are not compliant.

What Happens If You Skip It

Two things go wrong when servicing lapses. First, the practical risk: an extinguisher with degraded pressure, a corroded valve, or expired agent may simply not work when someone grabs it during an actual fire. Second, the compliance risk: BOMBA inspections during Fire Certificate renewal check for current eFEIS stickers on every extinguisher on the premises. A single missed or expired service can hold up your entire renewal, and repeat non-compliance can result in fines.

Beyond Annual Servicing: Hydrostatic Testing

Extinguisher cylinders also have a maximum lifespan for the cylinder itself, separate from the yearly service. Depending on the extinguisher type, cylinders need hydrostatic pressure testing at longer intervals (commonly every 5 years for some types, longer for others) to confirm the cylinder can still safely hold pressure. Your servicing contractor should flag when a unit is due for this and whether it's more economical to test or replace.

A Simple Way to Stay on Top of It

The businesses that never scramble before a BOMBA inspection are the ones that treat extinguisher servicing as a fixed annual calendar item, not something to think about only when a renewal notice arrives. A few practices help:

Keep one running list of every extinguisher on-site with its last service date and location. Book the annual service with enough lead time before your Fire Certificate renewal, not the same week. Do the monthly visual check consistently - it costs nothing and catches obvious problems early.
